NSA Ribadu Assures Parents of St. Mary’s Kidnapped Pupils: “They Are Doing Fine and Will Be Back Soon”

National Security Adviser (NSA) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has reassured parents of the over 300 pupils and staff abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwarra LGA, Niger State, that the children are safe and will be returned soon. Federal authorities have intensified efforts to secure their release.

Ribadu gave the assurance on Monday during a meeting at St. Michael’s Catholic Cathedral, Kontagora, attended by the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, parents of the victims, and officials of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). He was accompanied by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Bernard Doro, DSS Director General Oluwatosin Ajayi, and CAN Northern Nigeria Chairman, Rev. Joseph Hayab.

“This is a very solemn and difficult moment for us, especially after hearing from parents and community members,” Ribadu said. “We take responsibility because it is our duty to protect you. The children are where they are and will come back safely. God is with them and God is with us. Evil will never win.”

According to Daniel Atori, media aide to Bishop Yohanna, the reassurance brought relief to many parents, although some remained cautiously hopeful until their children are reunited with them.

Ribadu emphasized that his visit was made at the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting, “This is a directive from President Tinubu. He is in sorrow just like all of us. He suspended his journey to ensure our presence here.”

He further called for national unity in confronting insecurity: “Enough is enough. We will not relent in our efforts. Let us not allow bad people to divide us or let evil take root.”

The NSA also highlighted international support for Nigeria’s efforts, mentioning collaboration with countries including the United States, France, and the United Kingdom to combat the decades-long wave of kidnappings.

“We will strengthen security in the affected communities. You will see immediate reactions and responses. One thing I know is that evil people will always be around, but this incident will change Nigeria for good,” Ribadu said.

However, CAN leaders expressed deep reservations about the state government’s response. A source at the meeting told SaharaReporters that CAN accused Governor Umar Bago of failing to act promptly and disregarding the plight of the victims, further undermining confidence in the state’s handling of the crisis.
