Oby Ezekwesili Criticizes INEC, Says Democracy is Failing Nigerians

Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has strongly criticized Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing it of losing credibility and undermining democracy. She made this statement during an interview on Arise Television’s news programme on Thursday.

Ezekwesili observed that democracy in Nigeria is no longer functioning effectively because it has been gradually captured by powerful interests. According to her, this has left citizens disillusioned, powerless, and increasingly disengaged from political participation.

She explained that the withdrawal of citizens from active involvement in governance has created space for state capture, while key institutions meant to safeguard the democratic process have become compromised. She specifically pointed to INEC and the judiciary, stressing that both institutions no longer command public trust.

“The INEC as an electoral umpire is compromised. They no longer have the trust of society. The judiciary has also entangled itself in political manipulations, which has contributed to the deep crisis we now face,” she said.

Ezekwesili further noted that global stakeholders are now exploring ways to reposition citizens at the center of governance. She emphasized that freedom and active citizen participation are crucial for innovation, accountability, and sustainable progress in any society.
