The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex socio-cultural organisation representing the Igbo people, has firmly dismissed rumours that it asked former presidential candidate Peter Obi to abandon his 2027 ambition.
In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, Ohanaeze labelled the circulating reports as pure mischief from faceless individuals trying to exploit the organisation’s name for political gain.
According to Chukwu, the claims—suggesting that Ohanaeze had urged northern leaders not to support Obi—were nothing but falsehoods spread by “starving street urchins” operating fake Ohanaeze accounts from POS locations.
“It is important to set the record straight,” the statement read. “Ohanaeze Ndigbo did not and will not issue any such warning to Peter Obi. Nor have we asked any region, including the North, to avoid supporting him.”
Chukwu emphasized that Ohanaeze’s current leadership, including Senator John Azuta Mbata, Prince Okey Nwadinobi, and Emeka Sibeudu, stands for integrity and would never indulge in such ignoble political drama.
The group reaffirmed its neutrality in political matters, stating it has not endorsed any candidate for the 2027 elections. Ohanaeze, they said, is committed to the welfare of the Igbo nation and the advancement of Nigeria through equity, justice, and fairness.
They also called on Nigerians and the media to ignore fake statements from groups parading as Ohanaeze but who are, in their words, “incurable mercenaries doing the dirty bidding of desperate politicians.”
