Olubadan Clears Air on Alaafin Snub Rumour, Says Incident Was Misunderstood

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has dismissed claims circulating on social media that he deliberately ignored or snubbed the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, during a recent public event in Ibadan. He described the incident as a simple misunderstanding that has been exaggerated online.

Speaking with journalists in Ibadan, the monarch explained that there was no intention to show disrespect to the Alaafin or any other traditional ruler present at the function. According to him, the situation was shaped by timing and protocol, not personal feelings or royal rivalry.

Oba Ladoja said he arrived slightly late at the event and tried to take his seat quietly so as not to disrupt ongoing proceedings. He noted that his movement was purely situational, adding that social media users drew conclusions without understanding what actually happened.

“There was no intention whatsoever. What happened was not deliberate,” the Olubadan said. “People have misinterpreted it, especially on social media. When I arrive late at an event, I try to settle down calmly. It’s like entering a mosque during prayers — you wait for the right moment and join properly.”

He further explained that his designated seat was between the Soun of Ogbomoso and the Alaafin of Oyo, which required him to pass through several people. “I didn’t decide to avoid or ignore anyone. Why should I? If you watch the full video, you will see me greeting people, including the governor,” he added.

Addressing suggestions that he should reach out to apologise, Oba Ladoja said he did not see the incident as offensive or insulting to anyone. In his view, the issue has been blown out of proportion by selective clips and online commentary.

The Olubadan used the opportunity to restate his commitment to unity and development, stressing that traditional institutions should focus on progress rather than distractions. “My goal is to unite both the present generation and those coming after us,” he said. “We must raise our standards, especially in education, and concentrate on what truly brings growth to our society.”

His clarification appears aimed at calming tensions and reminding the public that not every viral moment reflects the full story behind it.
