THE Executive Chairman of Oredo Government Council Dr. Tom Obaseki, on Thursday 21st March 2024, launched the Boxing Competition of OredoGames2024.
OredoGames which have been likened to the Olympics at the Local Government Level is the first to be organized by a Local Government in Nigeria setting Oredo in the history books.
The Boxing Bouts of OredoGames 2024 which was launched at the indoor sports complex of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium had boxers from all parts of the country in attendance and will be challenging for the various medal categories available.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Tom Obaseki said the event heralds the future of the sports revolution in the new Oredo that is envisioned. He also noted the developmental effect of sports and the need for Oredo to begin keying in as a veritable vehicle towards internationalization.
According to the Chairman; “As the name goes Oredo Games, suggests that we are not only going to stop with Boxing other sporting activities will follow.
Speaking Further, the Chairman noted ” We are also going to have a ward Football League and these are all going together. Probably in the future, we envisage a one-week all-together sports event”
He further encouraged ward leaders to drive the initiative and make it a profitable career for the younger people even as the Oredo Games 2024 is believed to be a testament to the commitment to nurturing budding talents and viable community
On his part, the leader of the legislative arms of the Council, Hon. Harrison Idemudia, praised the dexterity of the Council Chairman for the novel idea and assured of efforts in cascading the initiative to the grassroots to encourage their active participation.
Also speaking is the HC, local govt, and community and chieftaincy affairs but represented by Erhabor Jackson of the State Sports Commission who stressed the need to engage the youths in sporting activities.
The elated Special Assistant on Internationalization to the Chairman, Ronnie Jacobs who served as a key actor in the transmission of the game’s events to international communities praised the initiator and his team for a successful run. He expressed confidence in his role in projecting the new Oredo to the world.
Precious Samuel, a Participating Boxing athlete, and others cut across Lagos, Oyo, Ikpoba Okha, and the host, Oredo, United in their expectations after they were introduced to take part in the shadowboxing where official engagement between opponents are expected to kick off by Friday at noon.
Amongst the Dignitaries who attended the launch event were the Secretary of the Council, Dr. Wellington Osadolor Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission Olympia Yusuf Ali, Permanent Secretary Dr. Emmanuel Igbinosa, Deputy Director of Sport Organizing, Lady Doris Omoragbon, Edo South
The event is already being tagged as probably the best and the first boxing craft in recent times organized by the Oredo Government Council to build future boxing Champions in Nigeria as boxers are prepared to slug it out in the bout at the indoor sports complex of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
