I received with profound sorrow the news of the passing of a titan of our nation’s history, a fearless advocate for justice and democracy, and a principled statesman—Pa Ayo Adebanjo. His departure marks the end of an era and leaves an irreplaceable void in the conscience of our nation.
I had the distinct honour of working closely with Baba Adebanjo during Nigeria’s Second Republic, when I served as a Member of the House of Representatives under the platform of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), a political movement that he helped shape alongside the great Chief Obafemi Awolowo. His brilliance, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice were unmatched. He was a mentor, a leader, and an elder statesman whose life was wholly dedicated to the betterment of Nigeria.
Pa Adebanjo’s journey was a testament to resilience and selfless service. From his youthful days fighting against colonial rule to his relentless struggle against military dictatorship, and his later years championing the cause of good governance, democracy, and equity, Baba Adebanjo stood as a beacon of integrity and principle. He never wavered in speaking truth to power, even when it was inconvenient. His voice was a moral compass that guided the political evolution of our nation.
In the darkest moments of our national history—whether in the face of military rule or the erosion of democratic values—Pa Adebanjo remained unyielding. His role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) was pivotal in our collective struggle to restore democracy to Nigeria. He was a statesman who never shied away from battle when the fate of the nation was at stake.
Even in his latter years, Baba Adebanjo’s wisdom, clarity of thought, and patriotic fervor never diminished. He continued to challenge leaders, demand accountability, and advocate for a just and equitable Nigeria. His life was a roadmap for all who seek to serve Nigeria with sincerity and conviction.
Nigeria has lost a legend, but his legacy will never be erased. His ideals of justice, equity, and democracy will continue to inspire generations to come.
To his family, the Afenifere family, the people of Ogun State, and all Nigerians who share his vision for a just and united nation, I extend my deepest condolences.
May his soul find eternal rest, and may his indomitable spirit continue to guide us in the pursuit of the Nigeria he so tirelessly fought for.
