Tension rocked the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt as aides to the departing Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), staged a protest over unpaid allowances and entitlements.
The aides, who once shielded and served Ibas, turned against him, accusing him of attempting to leave office without settling their dues.
Shouts filled the air as aides and even some of Ibas’ security detail wailed openly, accusing him of trying to “sneak away” with Rivers State’s wealth while leaving them empty-handed.
The scene grew tense, prompting Ibas’ Chief of Staff to intervene and beg the angry aides to calm down with vague assurances that “something will be done”.
The protest has been described as a symbol of Ibas’ disastrous stay in office, with many viewing it as a testament to his alleged reckless leadership and betrayal of trust. As his exit looms, even those closest to him cannot hide their disillusionment.
The unpaid entitlements have sparked widespread criticism, with many questioning Ibas’ leadership and commitment to his staff.
The incident has also raised concerns about the legacy of Ibas’ administration and the potential consequences of his actions.
As Ibas prepares to hand over power to suspended Governor Sim Fubara, the protest highlights the need for transparency and accountability in government.
The question on everyone’s lips is: will Ibas’ departure bring relief to his aides and the people of Rivers State? Only time will tell.
