PDP Candidate Kurya Defects to APC in Zamfara After Bye-Election Loss

Hon. Muhammad Lawal Kurya Madaro, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the recently concluded Kaura Namoda South Constituency bye-election, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State.

The bye-election, held on September 16, 2025, ended in a landslide victory for the APC, a development widely regarded as a significant blow to the ruling PDP in the state. Kurya, who represented the PDP in that contest, was decisively defeated by the APC’s candidate, prompting speculation about his next political move.

Speaking at a well-attended event organized by the Hon. Yazid Shehu Danfulani Project at the Taula Event Centre in Gusau, Kurya explained that his defection stemmed from the PDP’s “lack of direction and internal unity.” According to him, the outcome of the election reflected a strong shift in public sentiment.

“I realized that during the by-election, over 90 percent of the electorate, especially the youth, supported the APC despite the PDP being in power. I can no longer remain in a party that has lost touch with the people,” Kurya stated. He pledged to mobilize his supporters to strengthen the APC’s structure in Zamfara and contribute to its national growth.

Receiving Kurya and his supporters, the APC State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Yusuf Idris Gusau, warmly welcomed the defectors and assured them of fair and equal treatment within the party. “The APC remains the party to beat in Zamfara. We will continue to operate as one united family, ensuring every member is treated with fairness and respect,” he said.

Yusuf also commended the leadership qualities of former governors Bello Mohammed Matawalle, now Minister of State for Defence, and Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar, a serving senator, describing them as key figures in the APC’s growing influence in Zamfara. He expressed confidence that the party would reclaim control of the state in the 2027 general elections, citing the rising wave of defections and growing public acceptance.

The event drew the presence of several notable APC stakeholders, including the State Welfare Secretary, Hon. Bashir Idris Ataka; his deputy, Alhaji Shehu J. Muhammad; Special Adviser to the Minister of State for Defence, Hon. Ibrahim Maigandi Danmalikin Gidan Goga; and the convener of the Yazid Shehu Danfulani Project, Mallam Abubakar Sadiq, among others.

Yusuf further disclosed that more PDP leaders were preparing to join the APC in the coming weeks, signaling a continued realignment of political forces ahead of the 2027 elections.
