Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart Dan Ulasi has said he would welcome the return of Peter Obi to the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections. Speaking on Arise Television, Ulasi argued that Obi’s credibility and wide popularity could significantly improve the party’s chances at the polls.
According to him, any political platform that has Obi already gains “30 to 40 per cent of the election” because of the support he commands nationwide. However, Ulasi noted that Obi’s next political step remains uncertain. He pointed out that while Obi ran on the Labour Party ticket in 2023 and has been seen at the launch of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), he currently has no clear political base.
On zoning, Ulasi stressed that fairness should guide the PDP’s choice of presidential candidate in 2027. He argued that the ticket, already zoned to the South, should be further micro-zoned to the South-East, since it remains the only region yet to produce a Nigerian president.
Ulasi also said the PDP is focused on rebuilding itself. He described the party’s recent national executive meeting as encouraging, with nearly seven governors present, all pledging to strengthen the platform for 2027 and beyond.
Peter Obi, who served as Governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014, was PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019. He left the party in 2022 before its presidential primary and later contested on the Labour Party platform, where his “Obidient Movement” disrupted Nigeria’s traditional two-party race and earned him a strong third-place finish in the 2023 election.
