PDP Crisis Deepens as Turaki Faction Slams Police Over Secretariat Unsealing

The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party has taken another dramatic turn, as a faction led by Tanimu Turaki strongly criticised the Nigeria Police Force for unsealing the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the Turaki-led National Working Committee described the move as a violation of due process and alleged that the police acted with clear partisan bias. The faction also vowed to challenge the action in court.

The controversy stems from a long-running leadership battle within the PDP, which escalated into chaos at the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters in November 2025, when rival factions clashed over control. The Turaki camp, backed by Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, has been locked in a struggle with a faction aligned to Nyesom Wike.

Following the crisis, the dispute moved to the courts, and a Court of Appeal ruling in March 2026 favoured the Wike-backed faction, invalidating a convention held in Ibadan. Acting on that judgment, the rival faction welcomed the police decision to unseal the party’s offices, describing it as lawful and professional.

However, the Turaki faction insists the matter is still before the courts, arguing that an appeal has already been filed. It warned that the police action could undermine ongoing judicial proceedings and potentially render future rulings ineffective.

The group further accused the police of consistently taking sides since the crisis began, raising concerns about neutrality under the current leadership of the force. Despite the tension, the faction urged its supporters to remain peaceful while pursuing legal redress.

As the battle for control intensifies, the PDP faces growing uncertainty, with its internal divisions threatening to weaken the party ahead of future political contests.
