PDP Postpones Screening of Aspirants Ahead of 2025 National Convention Amid Internal Tensions

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the postponement of the screening exercise for aspirants ahead of its 2025 Elective National Convention, which was initially slated for Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

In a statement issued on Monday, Ahmadu Fintiri, the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Governor of Adamawa State, attributed the delay to “unforeseen circumstances.” He assured party members that a new date will be communicated soon, emphasizing the committee’s commitment to a transparent and credible convention process.

Fintiri also apologized for any inconvenience caused, noting that the postponement was necessary to ensure smooth coordination and fairness across all levels of the process. The 2025 National Convention remains scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The screening, originally to be conducted by a 13-member committee chaired by Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), was expected to vet aspirants vying for key national positions. However, the sudden delay came shortly after former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, declared his ambition to contest for the National Chairman position.

Political watchers have linked the postponement to growing internal tensions within the party, following reports that northern PDP leaders endorsed Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as their consensus candidate — a move strongly opposed by camps loyal to Lamido and Nyesom Wike.

The disagreement, alongside a string of recent resignations and factional divisions, signals deeper cracks within the PDP ahead of its highly anticipated convention — one that could shape the party’s future direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
