The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Federal and State Governments to take immediate and practical steps to protect citizens during the yuletide season and beyond, following the Christmas Eve explosion at a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the party described the incident as a painful reminder of the worsening insecurity confronting Nigerians across the country.
Ememobong condemned the attack as totally unacceptable and stressed that such acts must be confronted with urgency and seriousness. He expressed sympathy with the families of those who lost their lives, noting that no one should be killed while worshipping God.
He warned that continued attacks on places of worship, if left unchecked, would violate Nigerians’ constitutional right to freedom of religion and create an atmosphere of fear capable of tearing at the fabric of the nation’s religious and social life.
The PDP spokesperson added that Nigerians are not in need of promises or rhetoric but concrete and actionable security strategies deployed on the ground to guarantee safety for all citizens.
