Peter Obi challenges Tinubu on electricity promise after repeated national grid collapse

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has questioned President Bola Tinubu over his 2022 campaign promise on electricity, following the second collapse of Nigeria’s national grid in January 2026. Obi, in a statement on his verified X account titled “No Steady Power in Four Years, No Second Term,” reminded Nigerians of Tinubu’s pledge during the 2022 presidential campaign.

“President Bola Tinubu’s campaign promise in 2022 was clear: ‘If I do not provide steady electricity in my first four years, do not vote for me for a second term,’” Obi stated. He noted that the grid had already collapsed twice in January alone and highlighted Tinubu’s frequent foreign travels, currently being in Turkey, while domestic challenges persist.

Obi drew a comparison between Nigeria and Turkey, pointing out that Turkey generates and distributes over 120,000 megawatts of electricity, while Nigeria struggles with less than five percent of that capacity. He urged the president to focus on solving domestic problems instead of election preparations for 2027 and called on Nigerians to demand accountability and responsible governance to alleviate the hardships caused by poor leadership.
