Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the government over the demolition of citizens’ properties, describing the act as unlawful, insensitive, and harmful to Nigeria’s struggling population.
In a post shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Obi said the government’s actions are worsening the economic hardship faced by millions of Nigerians. His comments follow the recent demolition of several plazas at the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo, Lagos State, by officials from various state agencies, including the Ministry of Physical Planning and the Lagos State Building Control Agency.
Obi lamented that the “willful destruction of people’s homes, shops, and goods” by government authorities is unacceptable, especially at a time when the nation is battling widespread poverty and inflation. He noted that such demolitions have continued under an administration that has already pushed many into deeper financial distress within 29 months of governance.
“The government should be helping citizens find relief, not compounding their suffering,” Obi wrote. “These demolitions destroy livelihoods, undermine businesses, and threaten the economic security of hardworking Nigerians.”
He urged authorities at all levels to embrace compassion and adopt policies that prioritise rebuilding and supporting vulnerable communities instead of actions that drive more people into poverty.
