Plateau Mourns Imam Abdullahi, Hero Who Saved 262 Lives; 25 Kidnapped Children Rescued

The people of Nghar village in Plateau State are mourning the passing of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, who died at the age of 90.

In June 2018, during deadly faith-based clashes across 10 villages in Barkin Ladi, Imam Abdullahi bravely sheltered 262 Christians in his mosque and home, saving them from potential massacre. His courage earned him several accolades, including the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award from the US Department of State.

Confirming his death, his son Saleh Abubakar said the Imam passed away Thursday night at Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos, after battling a heart condition. He leaves behind 19 children—12 boys and seven girls. Burial will take place today following Jumma’at prayers in Nghar village.

In related news, Plateau State authorities successfully rescued 25 children abducted on December 21, 2025, in Wase Local Government Area. The kidnappers had disguised themselves as vigilantes while targeting children en route to a Maulud celebration. Three other children reportedly escaped during the attack.

The Secretary to the State Government, Samuel Jatau, described the rescue as a major success for security agencies, highlighting the ongoing commitment to protect children and vulnerable citizens in the state.
