Police Arraign Lexus SUV Driver Over Fatal Crash That Killed Two in Anthony Joshua Accident

The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned the driver of a Lexus SUV involved in the tragic road accident that claimed two lives while conveying former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.

The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was on Friday brought before a Sagamu Magistrate Court, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi. His arraignment follows investigations into the accident that occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

Kayode is facing multiple charges, including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily harm and property damage, as well as driving without a valid National Driver’s Licence. The offences are said to be contrary to provisions of the Federal Highway Act, as applicable in Ogun State.

The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties. However, he was remanded in custody pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions. The case was adjourned to January 20, 2026, for further hearing.

The incident had earlier generated widespread attention after social media reports falsely suggested that Anthony Joshua was the driver involved. The Ogun State Police Command later clarified that Joshua was neither driving the vehicle nor a suspect in the case.

Police findings revealed that the accident happened on Monday when the Lexus SUV, driven by Kayode, collided with a stationary truck while transporting Anthony Joshua and two of his friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. The impact led to the instant deaths of Ayodele and Ghami, while Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries.

Anthony Joshua was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday evening after doctors confirmed he was fit to continue recovery at home. He was later seen, alongside his mother, visiting a Lagos funeral home to pay last respects to the deceased, as arrangements were made to repatriate their bodies.

In a statement issued in Abeokuta on January 2, 2026, DSP Babaseyi confirmed that investigations into the incident have been concluded and assured the public that the case would be thoroughly prosecuted in line with the law.
