Police Arrest Nigerian Businesswoman For Burning Maid’s Hands, Privates In Imo
The Imo State Police Command has arrested 38-year-old businesswoman Juliet Igwe for allegedly subjecting her six-year-old maid, Onyinyechi, to serious physical abuse.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, the arrest followed intelligence received by officers at the Ideato North Division, supported by a prompt report from the Stand for Human Rights Foundation, an NGO led by journalist and activist Chidiebube Okeoma.
Okoye described the case as “inhumane and completely unacceptable,” noting that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has ordered a thorough investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department. He assured that the suspect would be charged to court once inquiries are concluded.
During questioning, the suspect admitted to harming the child but claimed she did not fully understand the consequences of her actions.
Okeoma, whose foundation discovered the abuse, confirmed that the organisation rescued the child and handed her over to the authorities. He added that the foundation has taken responsibility for the child’s medical care and welfare, with support from the Imo State Health Insurance Agency.
He called for strong public condemnation of acts of child cruelty and expressed confidence that justice would be served.
