Police Foil Cattle Rustling Attempt in Sokoto, Recover AK-47 and Stolen Livestock

The Sokoto State Police Command has thwarted a cattle rustling operation in Goronyo Local Government Area, recovering a high-powered firearm, ammunition, and stolen animals after a swift intelligence-led response. The operation followed a distress call reporting that armed men had rustled several sheep in Tajaye Village.

According to the Command, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department received the alert around 4:00 p.m. on February 1, 2026. Detectives quickly teamed up with operatives from the Salame Division and moved into the area to track the suspects.

Investigations led the security team to the outskirts of Kola Village in neighbouring Gwadabawa LGA, where the suspects were located with the stolen livestock. On sighting the advancing officers and supporting local security groups, the suspects reportedly opened fire in a bid to escape.

The combined team, which included members of the Community Guard Watch and local vigilantes, responded with coordinated tactics that overwhelmed the criminals. The suspects fled into nearby bushes, believed to have sustained gunshot wounds, abandoning their weapon and the rustled animals.

A search of the area led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a loaded magazine, and 24 rounds of live ammunition. All the stolen livestock were retrieved and immediately returned to their rightful owners.

Commending the officers and community members involved, Commissioner of Police Ahmed Musa praised the professionalism and bravery displayed during the operation. He emphasized that the success highlighted the importance of cooperation between security agencies and local residents.

The Commissioner added that efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects, assuring the public that the Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property. Residents were urged to remain vigilant and continue sharing useful information, with a promise that all tips would be handled confidentially.
