THE recent unprecedented flooding disasters that affected Ekeke-Erah and massive windstorm that wreaked havoc in Ake and the Amoya area of Otuo in Owan East Local Government Area has been brought before the National Assembly by the Leader, House of Representatives, Prof. Julius Omozuanvbo Ihonvbere.
Moving a motion of urgent public importance brought under order 8, rule 5 (2) this Wednesday, 12th March, Prof. Ihonvbere noted with concern that the affected communities have been plunged into total darkness as a result of the flood that pulled down electric poles and damaged solar street lights in the affected communities.
The House Leader who also acknowledged the efforts of the Edo State Government, the Minority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Eric Okaka and Owan East Local Government in responding to the disaster, noted that the magnitude of the disaster is one that requires additional support from the Federal Government.
He therefore urged the Federal government to mandate the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to provide immediate relief materials, including food, water, blankets, mats, shelter, and medical supplies, to the affected areas.
The motion was overwhelmingly upheld and later referred to the House Committee on Natural Disaster for further legislative action.
