Purposeful Leadership and Collective Responsibility in Edo State: A Call for Genuine Support for Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo

By Comrade Ikhuenbor Felix Igbinevbo (Mr Figo)

Effective governance does not thrive on intention alone; it flourishes through coordination, clarity of roles, discipline, and a shared commitment to public service. For Edo State to fully realise its development vision, it is essential that all actors within the governance structure—citizens, political appointees, and political stakeholders—work in harmony, guided by a clear understanding of their responsibilities and a common purpose rooted in service to the people.

At the centre of this effort is a leader who genuinely means well for Edo State and its people. Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has demonstrated a sincere desire to serve, to make a positive difference, and to move the state forward. His disposition toward governance reflects concern for the welfare of the people and a willingness to work. However, leadership, no matter how well-intentioned, achieves its greatest impact only when it is supported by genuine cooperation, loyalty to purpose, and disciplined execution by those entrusted to help carry the vision.

Political appointees who operate in the name of government play a critical role in translating leadership intent into visible, measurable outcomes. Their conduct, coordination, and professionalism directly shape public confidence and influence how governance is perceived at every level. When appointees understand their roles clearly, work collaboratively, and place public interest above personal ambition, governance becomes more effective, efficient, and credible.

Respect for defined responsibilities and institutional boundaries is therefore essential. Political appointees perform best when they operate strictly within their assigned mandates and recognise the limits of their authority. Such discipline reduces friction, prevents unnecessary rivalry, strengthens accountability, and allows the government to function with order and purpose. A well-coordinated system not only improves productivity but also enables leadership to focus on policy direction and service delivery rather than internal distractions.

Equally important to effective governance is accessibility and meaningful engagement. Leadership is strengthened when citizens with genuine ideas and constructive contributions are encouraged to participate through proper and orderly channels. Open and structured engagement builds trust, deepens public confidence, and ensures that governance remains connected to the real needs, aspirations, and concerns of the people. When citizens feel heard and valued, support becomes organic and enduring.

There must also be a clear and deliberate distinction between party administration and state governance. While political structures play an important role in democratic organisation, governance exists to serve all Edo people, regardless of political affiliation. Maintaining this separation preserves professionalism, institutional integrity, and focus, allowing the government to concentrate fully on its mandate of development, service delivery, and public welfare.

Good governance is ultimately a collective responsibility. Citizens are encouraged to remain engaged, supportive, and constructive—offering criticism where necessary, but always with sincerity and a desire for progress. Political appointees are urged to uphold discipline, competence, humility, and unity of purpose, understanding that their actions reflect not only on themselves but on the leadership they serve and the government as a whole.

Genuine support is not blind praise, nor is it destructive opposition. It is rooted in honesty, cooperation, patience, and a shared commitment to success. When leaders who mean well are supported with sincerity and when systems around them function with coordination and discipline, governance is strengthened and progress becomes attainable.

Edo State can get it right. With purposeful leadership, genuine support, and collective responsibility from citizens and political appointees alike, the vision for a better, stronger, and more prosperous Edo State remains not only achievable but sustainable.
