Quick Action Save Abuja Market: Fire Breaks Out at Leventis Plaza

A potential commercial disaster was narrowly avoided in Abuja after the Federal Fire Service (FFS) swiftly contained a fire outbreak at Leventis Plaza, one of the city’s busy commercial centres.

The incident, which happened inside a tailoring workshop on the first floor of the complex, could have spread rapidly if not for the fast response of firefighters. The FFS confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by DCF P. O. Abraham, the Service’s National Public Relations Officer and Head of Corporate Services.

According to the Service, the fire was suspected to have been caused by an electrical surge, a common trigger for fires in commercial buildings. Thankfully, the flames were brought under control before they could spread to other parts of the plaza or nearby structures such as Grand Square, The Palm Hotels, and Frazier’s Suites.

Emergency protocols were immediately activated once the distress call was received. Firefighters from the Special Unit at the National Headquarters were dispatched without delay and arrived at the scene within five minutes. Led by SF Adoko, the team acted swiftly to contain the fire, protect surrounding properties, and prevent further outbreaks.

The FFS explained that officers carried out full firefighting, salvage, and overhaul operations, followed by a detailed inspection of the affected area to ensure the situation was completely safe. Their timely intervention significantly reduced damage, saving properties estimated to be worth about ₦900 million out of a total value of roughly ₦1 billion.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property nationwide, the Federal Fire Service also urged the public to take electrical safety seriously, especially in commercial environments. Nigerians were reminded to promptly report emergencies using the FFS emergency line on 08032003557 or the national emergency number 112.
