South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday condemned the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump, calling on American leaders to reject violence and seek peaceful resolutions.
In a statement on social media platform X, Ramaphosa highlighted the dangers of political extremism and intolerance, labelling political violence as the antithesis of democracy. He wished Trump a speedy recovery and expressed hope that both citizens and leaders in the US would have the wisdom to pursue peace over violence.
Incident at rally
The incident occurred during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, where Trump was shot in the ear, causing a streak of blood across his face. Security agents quickly responded to protect the Republican presidential candidate. The shooting is being investigated as a potential assassination attempt.
FBI investigation
The FBI identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Pennsylvania. Crooks, along with one rally attendee, was killed in the incident, while two other spectators were injured.
Ramaphosa’s call for peace
