Refueling: According to the Ministry of Finance, fuel prices no longer bring in tax revenue

The Federal Ministry of Finance expects despite this significantly increased fuel prices not that revenue from VAT also increases. “We still do not expect any additional revenue from VAT,” said a spokeswoman for the ministry. This also applies to the commercial price. She based the expectations on lower gasoline consumption and a certain consumer reluctance in view of the high prices.

Taxes and duties make up around half of the price of petrol and diesel in Germany. In addition to the energy tax and CO₂ tax, there is also the VAT of 19 percent. Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche had previously spoken of considerable additional income due to the increased fuel prices. There are initial estimates from institutes, and based on previous, comparable crises, it seems reasonable to assume “that there is between 100 and 200 million more in VAT revenue per month,” said Reiche to RTL and ntv.

Reiche wants to give additional income back to drivers

The CDU politician had, among other things a temporary increase in the commuter allowance and a reduction in diesel tax suggested. These measures should be financed through the higher VAT revenues it has announced.

According to Reiche, the increase over six months would correspond to around half a billion euros. This state revenue “should go back to those who have to drive a lot, who can’t do without a car or who need their truck,” demanded Reiche.

The spokeswoman for the Ministry of Finance did not want to comment on these figures. However, she reiterated that the ministry is currently not expecting any additional revenue from VAT. There is currently a conflict in the black-red coalition over further relief measures. Especially between rich and Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) is divided.
