Reps Dismiss Impeachment Rumours, Reaffirm Confidence in Speaker Tajudeen Abbas

The House of Representatives has shut down rumours of any move to impeach Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, stressing that members remain solidly behind his leadership.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the Deputy Spokesperson of the House, Rep. Philip Agbese, described the reports of a looming showdown against Abbas as “mere speculation” and a calculated attempt to create unnecessary tension in the green chamber.

Agbese praised the Speaker’s leadership style, noting that since assuming office, Abbas has shown fairness, respect for colleagues, and a deep commitment to the welfare of members and their constituencies. According to him, the Speaker has gone above and beyond to carry lawmakers along in decision-making while living up to the “People’s House” mantra.

He dismissed claims of grievances over staff recruitment in the National Assembly, clarifying that such appointments are handled by the National Assembly Service Commission — an independent body — and not the Speaker. “Dragging Abbas into matters outside his statutory powers is both mischievous and misleading,” he stressed.

To show responsiveness, Agbese explained that Abbas has already set up two special committees led by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and former Deputy Speaker Idris Wase to address concerns raised. He recalled several instances where the Speaker personally sacrificed his benefits, resources, and even personal comfort to ensure inclusivity and support for colleagues.

“Abbas is not just a leader, he is accessible and selfless. I recall one Christmas when I led about 13 members to him because they had nothing to share with their constituents. The Speaker immediately rose to the occasion,” Agbese said.

He added that Abbas has been instrumental in stabilising the House, decentralising committees, and creating opportunities for first-termers to occupy leadership positions. For Agbese and many of his colleagues, Abbas remains the best Speaker the parliament has had so far.

While admitting that challenges exist, especially in the area of constituency projects due to limited executive funding, Agbese maintained that Abbas has never relented in pushing for solutions. “He feels our pains and works tirelessly to ensure that constituents get what they deserve,” he said.

Reassuring Nigerians, Agbese emphasized that the House under Abbas remains united and focused on pressing national issues such as constitutional amendment, insecurity, economic reforms, and effective budget implementation.

He also appealed to the media to always verify their facts before publication, warning that unverified stories could undermine the working relationship between lawmakers and the Nigerian people.

“With Abbas, Nigerians can rest assured that the House is fully committed to delivering people-focused legislation and responsive leadership that speaks directly to the needs of citizens,” Agbese concluded.
