Retirees Shut Down NASS Gate as Protests Enter a New Phase

On Wednesday, 19 November 2025, the long-brewing frustration among Nigerian retirees reached a breaking point as they moved to block the main gate of the National Assembly in Abuja. What began as quiet agitation has now transformed into a bold and confrontational demonstration, signalling a new phase in their struggle for justice.

Witnesses say the protest started early in the morning, with hundreds of retired officers and civil servants gathering at the entrance to demand the immediate payment of outstanding pensions and gratuities. Many held placards highlighting years of unfulfilled promises, delayed payments, and the growing hardship facing elderly citizens who served the nation faithfully.

The atmosphere around the National Assembly quickly grew tense as the retirees refused to disperse, insisting that lawmakers must come out and address them directly. Their action caused gridlock, leaving staff, visitors, and motorists stranded for hours.

According to Retired DSP Ayuba Oyewale, reporting from the Oyo Chapter, the protest has taken “a new dimension,” reflecting widespread anger over neglect and prolonged suffering. He noted that many of the protesters travelled long distances despite age-related health challenges, driven by desperation and the rising cost of living.

Security personnel have been deployed to manage the situation, but the retirees remain resolute, vowing that they will not leave until their demands are met.

As the standoff continues, Nigerians are watching to see whether this dramatic escalation will finally compel the government to fulfil its obligations — or whether the retirees’ plight will once again be met with silence.
