Rivers Assembly Begins Impeachment Process Against Governor Fubara, Deputy

The political atmosphere in Rivers State took another dramatic turn on Thursday as members of the State House of Assembly formally commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Oduh.

The process began during a plenary session presided over by the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, where the Majority Leader, Major Jack, officially read a notice outlining allegations of gross misconduct against the governor.

According to the lawmakers, the notice—endorsed by 26 members of the Assembly—accuses Governor Fubara of actions alleged to be in breach of provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. The specific details of the allegations were formally laid before the House as part of the constitutional procedure for impeachment.

Speaker Amaewhule announced that the notice would be served on the governor within seven days, in line with legislative requirements.

In the same session, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, read a separate notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Deputy Governor Ngozi Oduh, signalling that impeachment proceedings had also been initiated against her.

The development marks the latest escalation in the ongoing political tensions within the state and sets the stage for further legislative and constitutional actions in the coming days.
