Rivers Assembly Rejects Court Ruling on Governor Fubara’s Impeachment

The Rivers State House of Assembly has dismissed a High Court ruling that attempted to halt the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.

The court had issued an interim injunction restraining the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, and the Clerk of the House from sending any correspondence to the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, and barred the Chief Judge from taking steps in the impeachment process.

However, the Assembly spokesperson, Enemi George, told DAILY POST that the court lacks the constitutional power to intervene. “The House is not aware of any court order. If you read Section 188(10) of the Nigerian Constitution, it clearly states that the court cannot intervene in the impeachment of a state governor,” he explained.

The statement highlights a clash between judicial orders and legislative authority, raising questions about the scope of constitutional powers in state-level impeachment cases in Nigeria.
