Royal Bonds Rekindled: Eswatini’s King Mswati III to Visit Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in Kumasi

In a majestic display of African unity and cultural diplomacy, King Mswati III of Eswatini is set to arrive in Kumasi on June 24 for a four-day royal visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The historic visit, which will run through June 28, underscores a deepening relationship between the southern African Kingdom of Eswatini and the Asante Kingdom in Ghana.

This visit is more than a diplomatic engagement—it’s a celebration of shared heritage, royal tradition, and pan-African solidarity. The two monarchs are expected to participate in a series of traditional ceremonies and private consultations, as they reaffirm the long-standing cultural and historical ties between their nations.

To prepare for the grand occasion, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has declared a massive clean-up exercise on Saturday, June 21. The Central Business District of Adum will temporarily shut down from 6 a.m. to noon as residents, business owners, and institutions join hands to beautify the city in honour of the royal guest.

“This is a moment of pride for Kumasi,” the KMA stated, urging full participation. “Let’s show the world the splendour of Asanteman.”

The upcoming visit builds on recent gestures of goodwill. In April 2024, a delegation from Eswatini attended the 25th anniversary of Otumfuo’s enstoolment. Earlier this year, Eswatini royals also joined traditional funeral rites for the late Mamponghene, Dasebre Osei Bonsu II—another powerful sign of solidarity.

As the countdown begins, anticipation is high for what promises to be a remarkable chapter in African royal diplomacy. With both kingdoms steeped in tradition and guided by visionary leaders, the visit of King Mswati III marks not just a reunion of royals, but a symbolic handshake between south and west Africa—rooted in respect, shared values, and unity.
