RUSSIA and Burundi have agreed to cooperate in the field of peaceful nuclear energy, which includes the potential construction of a nuclear power plant in the African nation, according to an intergovernmental agreement published on the official portal for legal acts on Tuesday.
The agreement was signed by Burundian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation Albert Shingiro and Russia’s Rosatom state nuclear corporation CEO Alexey Likhachev on July 27, 2023, during the Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg.
The document went into effect on March 20.
Among the areas of cooperation outlined by the agreement are the design and construction of energy and research nuclear reactors, water desalination plants, and particle accelerators.
Additional areas of partnership include the provision of nuclear fuel cycle services for power plants and research reactors, the management of radioactive waste, and the conduct of fundamental and applied research in the field of peaceful nuclear energy.
The agreement also covers the production of radioisotopes and their applications in industry, medicine, and agriculture.
Rosatom offers its partners a range of nuclear power plant projects with varying capacities, including small-capacity nuclear power units
