SDP’s Rufus Aiyenigba Speaks on Gabam’s Suspension, Coalition Politics, and 2027 Presidency

Mr. Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, National Publicity Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), says the party is stronger today than it was in 2023 and is firmly preparing for the 2027 elections. In an interview, he revealed that the SDP has undergone internal reforms, filled all vacancies in its National Working Committee (NWC), and suspended its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, over “maladministration and gross violation” of the party’s constitution.

Aiyenigba dismissed claims of factionalism, insisting that INEC and the police only recognise Dr. Olu Agunloye as the authentic National Secretary. He added that the emergence of another group led by Modibbo does not amount to a legal faction. “There is no faction in the SDP going by the law, INEC’s position, and security records,” he said.

On coalition talks, he explained that SDP was rated as the strongest opposition structure but rejected attempts by individuals seeking to hijack the party. “They wanted nine out of 15 NWC positions, including Chairman and Secretary. We said no. SDP is not transactional and will not dissolve into any party,” Aiyenigba stated. He, however, maintained that SDP remains open to alliances that respect its identity and national agenda.

Looking ahead, he said the party will field a presidential candidate in 2027, with its ticket expected to be hotly contested as in previous years. While 2023 flagbearer Prince Adewale Adebayo remains active and influential, Aiyenigba stressed that other aspirants will emerge and the best candidate will represent the SDP.
