SENEGAL’S Sangomar offshore oil field has exceeded expectations, producing 16.9 million barrels of crude oil in 2024, surpassing its initial target of 11.7 million barrels. This marks a significant achievement for the West African nation’s growing energy sector.
A major boost to Senegal’s energy industry
Discovered a decade ago, the Sangomar field is located approximately 100 km south of the capital, Dakar. The field has become a key player in Senegal’s oil and gas industry, with projections set for 100,000 barrels per day (bpd) in future output.
A floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel, operated by Woodside Energy, arrived last year to facilitate operations. By the end of 2024, all wells at the site were online, contributing to the impressive production figures.
December sees record exports
December was particularly strong for Sangomar, with 2.96 million barrels produced, including three cargo shipments totalling 2.94 million barrels. These shipments were successfully exported, solidifying the field’s role in Senegal’s energy export strategy.
This remarkable performance highlights the growing potential of Senegal’s oil sector, with Sangomar leading the way in output and international trade.
