Serena Williams has reignited speculation about a potential return to tennis after refusing to rule it out during a television interview. Asked directly about a comeback, the 23-time Grand Slam champion replied, “I don’t know. I’m just going to see what happens.”
Now 44 and a mother of two, Serena has not competed since her third-round loss at the 2022 US Open. However, in December she re-entered the tennis anti-doping testing pool, a move that quickly fueled comeback rumors despite her earlier denials.
Speaking on the Today show on Wednesday, she kept her response deliberately vague. “I’m just having fun and enjoying my life right now,” she said, declining to give a definitive yes or no. When asked about the anti-doping program, she avoided the topic, saying, “I can’t discuss this.”
Former world number one Jim Courier noted that the demanding nature of the testing pool suggests serious intent, arguing that few athletes would rejoin it without plans to compete again. For many observers, the question now is not if Serena will return, but when and where.
