Shehu Sani Knocks Trump Over Travel Ban on Nigerians

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has criticised United States President Donald Trump over the partial travel ban placed on Nigerians, describing it as contradictory and unfair.

In a post shared on his verified X handle on Monday, Sani questioned the logic behind the policy, insisting that genuine concern for Nigerians should not come with restrictions. According to him, barring people from entering a country while claiming to protect them sends the wrong message.

“Trump should allow those Nigerians he claims to be protecting to freely travel to his country, the United States of America,” Sani wrote. “You cannot love a person and then bar him from your home.”

The former lawmaker further argued that the warmth and support Trump has shown towards white South Africans should be extended to Nigerians as well, stressing that selective affection undermines the idea of fairness. He added that “love with strings attached is not true love,” aligning himself with activist Omoyele Sowore’s views, which he described as logical and rational.

Sani’s comments come amid growing reactions to the partial travel ban imposed on Nigeria by the United States under President Trump’s administration. The policy has sparked debate across the country, with many Nigerians questioning its implications for diplomacy and bilateral relations.

The criticism also follows reports that on Christmas Day, President Trump authorised a US military airstrike on terrorist enclaves in Nigeria’s North-West region, a move that further intensified conversations around America’s role and intentions in Nigeria’s internal security matters.

Overall, Sani’s remarks reflect broader public frustration over policies seen as inconsistent, especially when they affect ordinary Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad.
