Legendary Afro-Juju icon Sir Shina Peters has made a jaw-dropping revelation about a dramatic moment in his early career. Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, the music legend confessed that he once pretended to be mentally unstable to regain public sympathy after his controversial split from Prince Adekunle’s band.
According to him, his exit was heavily criticized, with many fans accusing him of betraying his mentor for personal gain. The backlash, he said, was so intense that his team came up with a bold — and unconventional — plan to rebuild his public image.
“After I left Prince Adekunle’s band, people saw me as a traitor,” he recounted. “My record label boss and some media people suggested I act like someone who had gone mad. They believed it would make people feel sorry for me.”
He explained that the team braided his hair, left it unkempt for days, and dressed him in tattered clothes before taking him to Oyingbo Market to buy ewedu while secretly filming the scene. “They even made me act that way at a Julius Berger site in Badagry — eating in public and behaving like someone who wasn’t mentally okay,” he added.
Though strange, Sir Shina admitted the stunt eventually paid off. The public’s perception changed, sympathy poured in, and soon after, he successfully launched his solo career — one that would make him an Afro-Juju legend.
“It was a crazy plan, but it worked,” he laughed. “That’s how I won people back and became who I am today.”
