Soludo Reveals Why Okpoko Inspired His Governorship Ambition

Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has revealed one of the major reasons that inspired him to contest for the governorship election in 2022.

Speaking during the Ogbaru Constituency Campaign Rally held in Okpoko, Soludo said the deplorable condition of the area was a driving force behind his decision to seek office.

“Okpoko is one of the major reasons I contested to be governor of Anambra,” he said. “From 2010 until 2022, I could not sleep well seeing the way Okpoko was — the biggest urban slum in the Southeast, if not Nigeria, with over half a million people. No water, no road, no street lights, nothing.”

Soludo recalled that during his campaign, he had promised residents that help was on the way and vowed to begin his work in the area immediately after being sworn in.

“I told Ndi-Anambra that either the day of my swearing-in or the day after, I would resume work at Okpoko. I was sworn in on March 17, and on the 18th, I came here,” he said.

The governor noted that his administration has since completed over 20 kilometers of roads, installed street lights, provided pipe-borne water, and established a hospital in Okpoko for the first time. He also added that children in the community now enjoy free education under his government’s policy.

“That’s why we came — to serve you,” Soludo said. “I love you more, and one day, I’ll even take a room here.”
