Somali Referee Makes History with FIFA World Cup Appointment

Omar Abdulkadir Artan has written his name in the history books as the first Somali referee to be appointed for a FIFA World Cup tournament. His selection is not just a personal achievement but also a proud moment for Somalia and the African continent.

FIFA confirmed Artan among only three African centre referees chosen for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, scheduled to take place from September 27 to October 19 in Chile.

As the only Sub-Saharan African centre referee on the list, Artan stands tall alongside Morocco’s Jalal Jayed and Algeria’s Youcef Gamouh. This appointment highlights Africa’s rising influence in world football and firmly puts Somalia on the global officiating map.

Artan’s career has been filled with trailblazing moments. He became the first Somali referee to officiate a continental final when he handled the CAF Confederation Cup clash in Cairo, where Egypt’s Pyramids FC defeated South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.

He has also officiated at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), cementing his place among Africa’s most respected referees. Now, with the FIFA U-20 World Cup assignment, Artan has reached a new milestone in his career.

Adding to Africa’s presence at the tournament, FIFA has also selected several assistant referees from across the continent. These include Gilbert Cheruiyot of Kenya, Abelmiro Montenegro of São Tomé and Príncipe, Khalil Hassani of Tunisia, Eric Ayimavo of Benin, and Morocco’s Lahsen Azgaou and Mostafa Akarkad.

Artan’s breakthrough is more than just an individual achievement — it is a symbolic win for Somali football and a significant step for Sub-Saharan Africa’s representation on the global stage.
