Sowore’s Florida Allegations: EFCC Must Act, But Wike’s Reputation Is Priceless

Dr. Ugo Egbujo has weighed in on the latest controversy surrounding FCT Minister Nyesom Wike after activist Omoyele Sowore published documents alleging that Wike secretly acquired multimillion-dollar properties in Florida while serving as governor of Rivers State.

Egbujo acknowledges that Sowore has gone about it “with receipts”—property records, cash transactions, and even a direct petition to the Florida Attorney General’s office. The allegations claim that over $2 million in undeclared homes were bought under the names of Wike’s wife and children, raising potential anti-money laundering concerns. Egbujo says these are serious claims that the EFCC cannot ignore, stressing that even if Wike is innocent, a full investigation is necessary to clear the air for both the public and Wike’s supporters.

At the same time, Egbujo defends Wike’s character, describing him as a man of integrity and a “political deity.” He cautions that the allegations could be politically motivated, possibly from opponents like Atiku, and reminds Nigerians that Wike’s family background and legitimate wealth must be considered. He urges the EFCC to investigate thoroughly—not to punish, but to protect Wike’s reputation and prevent international ridicule.

Egbujo also criticizes the government’s track record on corruption, noting its pattern of going after small players while ignoring major cases. He stresses that the EFCC chairman, “a child of God,” must exercise moral courage, showing Nigerians that justice can be fair and transparent. Finally, he calls on Wike to engage international media like CNN and Fox News to tell his side, as local coverage can no longer contain the scope of the controversy.
