Sudan Military Chief Survives Drone Attack

SUDAN’S military announced that its top commander, Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, survived a drone attack on a military graduation ceremony in eastern Sudan. The attack, which occurred in Gebeit, resulted in five fatalities.

The incident involved two drones and took place shortly after the ceremony concluded. Despite the attack, Gen. Burhan, who was in attendance, remained unharmed, confirmed Lt. Col. Hassan Ibrahim from the military spokesman’s office.

Sudan has been embroiled in a brutal conflict for over a year, pitting the military against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a powerful paramilitary group.

With ongoing battles in the capital, Khartoum, the military and government leadership have relocated operations to eastern Sudan, near the Red Sea Coast. The drone attack in Gebeit marks the latest in a series of assaults on army positions, and it is the closest strike yet to Port Sudan.

The RSF has not claimed responsibility for these attacks and remained silent on Tuesday’s incident.

The attack comes a day after Sudan’s foreign ministry, aligned with the army, conditionally accepted a US invitation for talks in Switzerland scheduled for August. In response, the RSF stated that it would only negotiate with the army, excluding civil service members from the discussions.

The ongoing conflict and recent attacks underline the instability and violence gripping Sudan, as both sides struggle for control.
