Tanzania Preesident Fires Ministers In Cabinet Reshuffle

IN a strategic move to regain the trust of foreign powers and bolster her programme of economic and political reforms, Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has dismissed two senior government officials, including the foreign minister. The announcement came late on Sunday, detailing a mini-cabinet reshuffle that saw the termination of Foreign Minister January Makamba and Information Minister Nape Nnauye.

The reshuffle is part of President Hassan’s broader efforts to ease restrictions on opposition parties and the media, addressing concerns from critics about the faltering progress of these reforms, according to a Reuters report. The presidency did not provide specific reasons for the dismissals. Both Makamba and Nnauye are influential figures within the ruling party, Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM), and their removal marks a significant shake-up within the government.

The dismissal of Nnauye comes shortly after a controversial video surfaced in which he made comments implying that election results depend on who counts the votes. Although Nnauye later apologised, claiming his statement was a joke, the remarks were criticised by activists and on social media for undermining President Hassan’s efforts to improve democratic processes.

President Hassan appointed Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, previously Tanzania’s ambassador to Italy, as the new foreign affairs minister. Jerry Silaa, the former minister of lands, housing, and human settlements development, has been named the new minister of information, communication, and information technology. The reshuffle also included the appointment of two additional ministers and deputy ministers, according to the presidency.

Since taking office in 2021, President Hassan has been lauded for reversing many of her predecessor’s repressive measures against opposition groups and civil rights organisations. However, recent arrests of a lawyer and an opposition politician have cast doubts on the government’s commitment to human rights.

The reshuffle signals President Hassan’s ongoing commitment to reforming Tanzania’s political landscape and strengthening international relations. By making these changes, she aims to reinforce her administration’s dedication to fostering a more open and democratic society while pursuing economic growth and development.
