Taraba Youths Plan Protest Over Arrest Of Colleague Who Removed Governor Kefas’s Image From Campaign Banner

Tension is building in Taraba State as a group of youths prepares for a possible street protest following the arrest of one of their members over a political banner dispute.

The controversy centres around Agbu Kefas, whose image was allegedly removed from a campaign banner by the youths. According to sources, the banner was privately funded in support of former governor Jolly Nyame and his reported senatorial ambition.

Members of the group claim they took down Kefas’ image after concluding that he was not aligned with the political objective of the banner. They insist the action was a personal decision and did not break any law, describing the arrest of their colleague, Pius Ishaku, as unfair and intimidating.

The situation has escalated quickly, with reports that other members have gone into hiding out of fear of further arrests. The youths are now demanding Ishaku’s immediate and unconditional release, warning that failure to comply could trigger wider protests across the state.

At the centre of the allegations is a claim that a security aide to the governor ordered a crackdown on individuals perceived to be loyal to Nyame. However, the governor’s spokesperson, Emmanuel Bello, has dismissed the claim, stating that it is unlikely the governor authorised such action and that the matter will be investigated.

Supporters of the arrested individual argue that the response from authorities reflects a growing intolerance for dissent. They see the arrest not just as an isolated incident, but as part of a broader concern about political expression and freedom in the state.

In Nigeria’s political space, campaign banners often signal alliances and endorsements. Removing a figure’s image can therefore be interpreted as a shift in loyalty—something that can easily spark tension, especially in politically sensitive environments.

With emotions running high and calls for protest gaining momentum, attention is now on how security agencies and the state government will handle the situation. A measured response could calm tensions, but any further escalation may deepen mistrust and unrest among supporters.
