“The Erosion of Democracy in Nigeria’s Senate” By Comrade Ikhuenbor Felix Igbinevbo

THE Nigerian Senate’s current situation is alarming. With the Senate President allegedly sending money to senators’ accounts as private email or SMS, it’s clear that loyalty is being bought, not earned. This blatant disregard for transparency and accountability undermines the Senate’s integrity. The people’s trust is being eroded, and the Senate’s ability to represent them is compromised.

Furthermore, loyal senators are being granted underserved privileges, creating a culture of favoritism and cronyism. This not only undermines the principles of fairness and equality but also perpetuates a system where senators prioritize their own interests over the needs of the people.

This is the reason there’s no opposition in the Senate anymore. All political parties are united by shared values, and no one opposes or debates against the policies of the ruling party. This lack of opposition is a threat to democratic rights and freedoms, as it allows the ruling party to dominate decision-making without being held accountable.

In a parliamentary system, the opposition plays a crucial role in checking the power of the ruling party and ensuring that diverse perspectives are represented. However, in the Nigerian Senate, this opposition is nonexistent, allowing the ruling party to push through policies without scrutiny or debate.
