Joseph Daniels, a concerned citizen, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider the law requiring Nigerians to obtain a permit for tinted glasses on their vehicles.
Daniels argues that the standard practice globally is to allow car manufacturers to tint glasses at the back seats, and this law should only apply to those who deliberately tint their front seats.
Concerns Over Police Powers
Daniels questions the legality of the Inspector-General of Police’s power to make laws on tinted permits without input from the National Assembly, which he believes is the only body empowered to do so. He urges the Federal Government not to add to the burden of Nigerians who are already struggling with unfavorable economic policies.
Prioritizing Security
The activist also calls on the police to improve their strategies in combating kidnapping and insurgency, noting that most kidnapped victims are picked up on bad roads, not in tinted cars. This, he believes, should be the priority rather than enforcing a permit system that may not be effective in preventing crimes.
Background
The Nigeria Police Force had extended the grace period for enforcing the Tinted Glass Permit requirement to October 2, 2025. The police argue that the permit system is necessary to enhance national security and curb criminal activities facilitated by the misuse of tinted glass.
To obtain a permit, applicants must visit the official Police portal, (link unavailable), and follow the application process, which includes providing vehicle details, uploading required documents, and undergoing physical verification, Standarddailypress.com gathered.
