President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, keeping him in office until August 2026. This means Adeniyi, who was originally set to bow out on August 31, 2025, will now continue leading the agency for another year.
The announcement came on Thursday via a statement released by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to Onanuga, the extension is meant to give Adeniyi enough time to consolidate key reforms and complete strategic projects already in motion under the Tinubu administration.
President Tinubu reportedly commended Adeniyi’s leadership so far, describing him as a competent hand capable of strengthening the Customs Service—particularly in areas like trade facilitation, revenue generation, and national border security.
Adeniyi, a seasoned customs officer with years of experience, officially took over as Comptroller-General in October 2023 after initially serving in an acting capacity. Since then, he has been the face of several reform-driven efforts aimed at modernizing the agency and tightening Nigeria’s trade and customs frameworks.
With this extension, stakeholders in the trade and import-export sectors will be watching closely to see how Adeniyi maximizes the extra time to deepen reforms and improve efficiency across Customs operations.
