Tinubu Mourns Former IGP Solomon Arase, Hails His Lasting Legacy in Nigerian Policing

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound sadness over the passing of former Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, who died on Sunday at the age of 69.

In a heartfelt message released by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President commiserated with the Nigeria Police Force, Arase’s family, friends, and associates, describing his death as a painful loss to the nation.

Tinubu praised the late police chief as a “highly resourceful officer” who dedicated his life to building a stronger, safer Nigeria. He recalled Arase’s numerous reforms during his time as Inspector-General and later as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, noting that his vision left a lasting imprint on law enforcement in the country.

From establishing the Intelligence Response Team and Complaint Response Unit to enhancing highway patrols, Arase championed initiatives that reshaped policing in Nigeria. His service went beyond the borders, with notable roles in United Nations Peacekeeping in Namibia and leadership positions across intelligence, operations, and criminal investigations.

Even after retirement, Arase continued to give back, taking up roles that strengthened security and governance — from heading Edo State’s Anti-Community Development Association Task Force to consulting for national and international institutions on policing, human rights, and torture prevention.

President Tinubu offered prayers for his peaceful repose, describing him as a dedicated security expert whose wisdom and contributions will be sorely missed.

“Arase’s passing leaves a great void in our national security architecture. I pray for the peaceful repose of his soul and for comfort to his loved ones,” Tinubu said.
