Tragedy in Auchi: Young Seminarian Emmanuel Alabi Dies During Rescue From Kidnappers

The Catholic community in Edo State is mourning the heartbreaking death of Seminarian Emmanuel Alabi, one of the three students kidnapped from Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary, Ivianokpodi, in July 2025. His death was confirmed by the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, which also announced the release of another abducted student, Joshua Aleobua, on November 4, 2025.

In a statement signed by Rev. Fr. Linus Imoedemhe, Assistant Director of Communications, the Diocese expressed deep sorrow over Emmanuel’s death, noting that he “could not survive the course of the ordeal.” The Bishop of Auchi Diocese, Most Rev. Gabriel G. Dunia, described the loss as a painful reminder of Nigeria’s growing insecurity and urged security agencies to intensify efforts to safeguard lives.

The bishop also cautioned political leaders against ignoring the worsening insecurity, stressing that the safety and well-being of citizens must take precedence over political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections. The Diocese called on all Catholics and people of goodwill to pray for Emmanuel’s soul and for peace in Nigeria.

Fr. Imoedemhe reaffirmed the Diocese’s commitment to faith, peace, and justice, adding that the Church continues to trust in God’s mercy to comfort Emmanuel’s family, the seminary community, and all those affected by the tragedy.

As the community mourns, Emmanuel’s death serves as another painful reminder of the urgent need to confront insecurity across the nation — a cry for justice, peace, and safety for every Nigerian child.

“May the soul of Emmanuel Alabi, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”
