Tragedy in Bangladesh as Bus Plunges Into River, Leaving Dozens Dead

A heartbreaking accident in Bangladesh has left at least 26 people dead after a passenger bus plunged into the Padma River, turning what should have been an ordinary journey into a devastating disaster for dozens of families.

The crash happened on Wednesday near Daulatdia in Rajbari district, not far from Dhaka, when the bus, reportedly carrying about 40 passengers, lost control close to a ferry terminal and fell into the river. What followed was a desperate rescue effort as survivors fought to escape while others remained trapped inside the submerged vehicle.

Emergency officials said most of the victims were recovered from inside the bus after it sank deep into the river. Among the dead were women and children, making the tragedy even more painful for the affected families. Two additional women were later confirmed dead after they had initially been pulled out alive, pushing the death toll even higher.

Witnesses described a horrifying scene. Some passengers managed to break free and escape, but many others were unable to get out in time. Local residents reportedly rushed to help, using whatever they had — including long scarves — to pull people from the water as terrified survivors tried to swim to safety. Rescue teams, divers, and security personnel later joined the operation, but officials feared that not everyone had been accounted for immediately.

Beyond the tragedy itself, the accident once again shines a harsh light on the transport safety crisis in Bangladesh. Road and ferry-related accidents have remained a deadly problem in the country for years, often caused by reckless driving, weak vehicle maintenance, and poor transport conditions. Sadly, this is not an isolated incident but part of a wider pattern that continues to cost innocent lives.

The pain is even heavier because this happened at a time when many families are still moving around after the Eid holiday period — a season that often sees a spike in travel-related accidents. And for many observers, this latest disaster is yet another painful reminder that without stronger transport safety enforcement, more families could continue to suffer avoidable losses.

At the centre of all this are the people left behind — the parents, children, spouses, and loved ones now forced to deal with sudden grief after what should have been a simple journey ended in tragedy.
