Tragedy in Gwagwalada: Motorcycle Thieves Kill NYSC Member with Hammer

What was meant to be a simple family visit turned into a devastating tragedy for the family of Shuaibu Adamu, a young National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving his country in Kogi State. Shuaibu, a graduate of Political Science from the Federal University Gashua, Yobe State, lost his life in the most brutal way—allegedly at the hands of suspected motorcycle thieves.

The incident occurred on the night of Sunday, July 13, 2025, around 8 p.m. in Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT, just behind the AA Rano filling station along the Abuja-Lokoja expressway. According to residents, Shuaibu was heading back to his home in the area after visiting a relative when hoodlums blocked his path, struck him on the head with a hammer, and made away with his motorcycle.

A resident, Suleiman Ibrahim, who spoke with sorrow in his voice, said it was some neighbours who later found Shuaibu lying unconscious and quickly notified his family. He was rushed to the hospital but, sadly, didn’t make it. Doctors pronounced him dead the following night, and his remains were returned to his hometown in Abaji Area Council, where he was laid to rest on Tuesday.

Shuaibu was not just another name—he was a son, a brother, a promising youth serving his nation. He was also the child of a respected community leader, Alhaji Salihu Kankamba, the district head of Unguwar Sabon-Tasha in Abaji. The elder, shattered by the loss, prayed for Allah to grant his son Aljannah and called for justice for the senseless act that cut short a bright future.

Shuaibu’s story is a painful reminder of the growing insecurity on our roads and in our communities. He wore the NYSC uniform with pride and dedication, yet met his end at the hands of criminals who saw nothing wrong in trading a life for a motorcycle.

His death leaves a gaping hole in his family, his community, and among all Nigerians who still believe in the promise of youth service.
