Troops Crush Boko Haram Attack in Borno, Nation Mourns Fallen Colonel

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI once again showed courage and resilience when Boko Haram insurgents tried to ambush their convoy with explosives in Kareto, Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State. The terrorists set off two improvised explosive devices and opened fire, but the soldiers quickly regrouped, returned heavy fire, and neutralized 13 of the attackers.

The fierce exchange forced the insurgents to flee in disarray. In the aftermath, the troops recovered eight AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and bomb-making materials. Sadly, one soldier sustained injuries, while some military trucks were damaged. Despite the attack, humanitarian aid supplies under escort were safely delivered to Damasak.

But even as the army celebrated the victory, sorrow hung in the air. The remains of Colonel Bello Umaru, Acting Commander of the 7 Division Military Intelligence Brigade, were laid to rest at Maimalari Cantonment Military Cemetery in Maiduguri. Colonel Umaru passed away in his sleep on September 2, 2025, and was buried with full military honours.

At the funeral, Theatre Commander Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar described him as a patriotic and gallant officer whose life embodied discipline, honour, and service. Brigadier General MD Abdulsalam, who read the funeral oration, highlighted the late Colonel’s distinguished career from his commissioning in 2002 to his rise as Acting Commander.

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, also paid tribute, calling the late officer a brilliant intelligence strategist whose efforts contributed greatly to the fight against insurgency. The solemn ceremony was attended by top military commanders, government officials, colleagues, and grieving family members.

As the Nigerian flag was handed over to his next of kin, prayers filled the air, reminding everyone that while the fight against terror continues, the sacrifices of men like Colonel Bello Umaru will never be forgotten.
