UGANDA’S police have successfully rescued an Egyptian diplomat, Muhammad Ali Abdul Amidu, who was kidnapped near Kampala last week. The rescue operation was conducted with assistance from the Ugandan military.
The abductors, who had demanded a ransom of $40,000, threatened to kill Amidu if their demands were not met. The police statement confirmed the diplomat was unharmed despite the high-risk situation.
After tracking the kidnappers’ movements, authorities intercepted their vehicle as they made their way to a hotel in Wakiso, a district to the west of Kampala. In a tense confrontation, police shot dead one of the abductors, while the other suspects were apprehended. Two individuals are currently in custody.
This latest incident highlights ongoing concerns over the safety of foreign nationals in Uganda, where kidnappings have occurred in the past. In 2019, a US tourist and her guide were abducted during a safari but were later rescued in a highly publicised operation.
The authorities have vowed to increase efforts to combat such crimes, ensuring the safety of both citizens and diplomats.
