UN Safety Week: FRSC tasks Road Users on Attitudinal Change

 

THE Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Akwa Ibom Command, has called for a change of attitude among road users to ensure safety on the roads and reduce crash.

Mr Edward Odiete, the sector commander of FRSC, Akwa Ibom command, made the call during the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week on Wednesday in Uyo.

Trojaninsights reports that the 8th UN Global road safety Week commences from May 12 to May 18 with the theme; “Streets for Life: Make Walking Safe, Make Cycling Safe.”

Odiete said that the theme sought to promote and facilitate a shift to walking and cycling, which are more healthy, sustainable and economical modes of transport.

He urged all road users in the state to adhere strictly to road signs and obey traffic regulations to ensure reduction in road crashes.

“The theme also contribute directly and indirectly to the attainment of many Sustainable Development Goals, especially reduction in Road Traffic Crashes.

“United Nations Global Road Safety Week serves as a platform for activities to raise awareness about road safety issues, and to stimulate and advance responses as appropriate to address road traffic situations.

“Road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, with nearly 1.2 million people killed and as many as 50 million people injured each year.

“They are the leading killer of young people aged 5-29 years. Globally, more than I of every 4 deaths occur among pedestrians and cyclists.

“The 8th UN Global Road Safety Week offers an opportunity to spur action at national and local levels to make walking and cycling safe.

“(It) highlights concrete and specific interventions that can be taken by different stakeholders, governments, international agencies, civil society, businesses, worship centres, schools, etc,” he said.

Odiete said that there is need to create a walk path on the roads for those cycling to ensure safety while on the road.

“Everyone is enjoined to ensure complete eradication of road traffic crash by ensuring discipline on the road and also adhering to road traffic rules and regulations,” he said.

NAN reports that the sensitisation campaign took road safety officials and road marshals to major parks in the state capital.
